About The Event

“When 23 writers are introduced to a collection of over 600 vintage aprons, a little magic is bound to happen,” says NYC producer/director Debbie Slevin. A theatrical production curated and assembled from over 100 pieces of writing submitted from around the world will be performed by an outstanding cast of professional actors. Premiering at the AMT Theater, 354 West 45th Street, NY, November 14-18, it includes a display of over 300 aprons from the collection of Long Island historian Diane Schwindt.

There are stories of harrowing immigration passages and pizza baking, of Nonna , Zeyde, and Abuela, of soldiers, nurses, clerks and weavers. From Italy, Greece, Russia, Houston (!) and beyond. They have prepared food, honed stone, cared for others, carried nails, worked cash registers, baked pastries. They have labored and crafted, and done this for both payment and love.

Apron Strings: “The Ties That Bind” explores the commonalities of our experiences and celebrates what binds us all.

About The Organizer

Debbie Slevin is a writer, teacher, and theatrical creative who developed a show after being inspired by a huge vintage apron collection. Overcome with all the stories behind the aprons, Slevin reached out to writers worldwide and crafted a show of 23 pieces that capture how we are all connected by our origin stories.
